Y6946: P.1845 INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD, ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS/ ROYAL IRISH RIFLES

Brass hilt, retaining some gilding, “VR” monogram in cartouche; shark skin covered grip, brass wire binding; 33ins blade, etched with “VR” monogram, foliage, original owner’s family crest and initials “D. H.”; Wilkinson maker’s details, and number for 1884. In brown leather FS sheath, steel chape. Hilt slightly bent, one small piece missing, otherwise good condition. The sword of Lt.Colonel Desmond Lambert Hartley, born 1862, the son of Col. R.W. Hartley. Joined Army as Lt., Yorkshire Rgt, 1884, served in Boer War with 4th Mounted Infantry, QSA Medal 5 clasps; Lt.Col, 5th Batt. Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 1904-1910. Recalled for Great war, and commanded 7th Batt. Royal Irish Rifles

Y6945: P.1822 GRENADIER GUARDS SERGT.’S SWORD. Rare pattern carried between around 1822 and 1845, having the 28¾ins pipe-back blade of the P.1833 Infantry Officer’s sword

Blade with “Nutting, London” etched maker’s name; all brass fittings; lion’s head pommel; knuckle bow with Grenadier Guards’ flaming grenade badge and “Honi Soit Qui Maly Pense” motto in centre; in brass mounted black leather scabbard. Dark, uncleaned condition, some tiny nicks to blade, shark skin covering of grip worn in places; back seam of scabbard coming unstitched in lower section, otherwise good condition. Almost no examples of this sword are known to have survived

Y6944: P.1821 ROYAL MARINE ARTILLERY OFFICER’S SWORD

3 bar steel hilt, shark skin grip a little worn; wire binding missing; long 34ins. blade, finely etched with “Royal Marine Artillery”, foliage, “VR” monogram, “Gibraltar” battle honour, motto “Per Mare, Per Terram”, globe, field gun, etc.; maker’s name “Trayler, High St., Portsmouth”. In steel sheath. Slight pitting on hilt, otherwise good condition. Scarce sword

Y6943: P.1805 WARRANT OFFICER’S AND MASTER’S SWORD

Black shark skin grip, with brass wire binding; fouled anchor on langets; 32½ins blade, etched with anchor, Georgian crown, etc.,; black leather sheath with brass mounts, top mount engraved on reverse with maker’s details, “Batten, Fore St, Devonport”. Some traces of gilding remaining. Good condition, slight staining to blade. With original blue and silver bullion dress knot, worn. Period Royal Navy knots are extremely rare to find

Steel hilt, GR6 monogram; shark skin grip, brass wire binding; 32½ins blade, etched with “GR6” monogram, Royal coat-of-arms, foliage, “Fear Naught” motto, Tank Corps badge, retailer’s details “The House of Lewis, 32 Bridge St., Bristol”. In brown leather FS scabbard, chape is period repair. Some wear to hilt plating, some staining to blade. Rare sword to the Tank Corps, very few examples known
